“Had an amazing tour and explanation from Leonardo regarding the entire agave spirit process at their beautiful facility in Roma, Texas. Our time at their beautiful historic facility was very thorough, explaining the history and process of mezcal and tequila and ultimately the agave spirit they produce in Texas. We had many questions and the passion and knowledge held by Leonardo was evident. Highly recommend the visit to Roma to visit Ancestral facility to taste Blasfemus!!”

A still inside a 140-year-old general store.
Ancestral Craft Spirits distils Blasfemus in the historic heart of Roma, Texas — steps from the U.S.–Mexico border, on a plaza that has barely changed since the 1880s.
It began with a family recipe
It began with a family story — a whispered recipe, passed down from ancestors who first settled the land that would become Texas. Eduardo Ocampo’s people arrived in Roma eight generations ago, when this was Spanish territory.
Through old documents, memories and shared meals, a legacy built on agave, perseverance and experimentation came back into view. Blasfemus was the first tribute to it.
This distillery is the meeting point between old-world method and new-world nerve. It is where agave becomes art, and where a family history becomes something you can pour into a glass.

“We exist to give agave a Texan voice — and to create experiences that connect people to place, history and culture, one sip at a time.”Our vision

Why Roma, of all places?
Because there is nowhere else like it. The distillery occupies the Manuel Guerra Store, built in 1884, one of 38 historic properties in the Roma National Historic Landmark District.
- Built 1884 — a working still inside a National Historic Landmark District
- Viva Zapata! was filmed on this plaza in 1952
- The Roma Bluffs World Birding Center is thirty seconds’ walk away
- The Rio Grande and the international bridge to Ciudad Miguel Alemán are a block below
- A courtyard out back for fire, music and long tables
What visitors ask about the distillery
What makes this distillery different from the others in Texas?
Blasfemus was the first agave spirit ever made in Texas. Every other Texas distillery works in whiskey, vodka, gin, rum or sotol — agave was the category nobody here had entered. On top of that, the production floor is a National Historic Landmark District building from 1884, on the plaza where Viva Zapata! was filmed in 1952. The still and the history are in the same room.
What spirits do you produce?
Three expressions of Blasfemus — the 7, the 11 and the 17 — each named for the age of the agave at harvest. Guests on a guided tasting try all three side by side. Read about the three expressions.
Are your spirits available for purchase onsite?
Yes. Bottles are available at the distillery, and buying one at the end of a tasting is what most guests do. Blasfemus also reaches selected bars and retailers well beyond the Valley — ask us where to find it near you.
Can I host a private event at the distillery?
Yes — corporate dinners, weddings, quinceañeras, buyouts and barrel-room dinners. Monday and Tuesday are held open specifically for private bookings. See the private events page.
Who founded Ancestral Craft Spirits?
Leonardo Sanchez and Eduardo Ocampo, who opened the distillery in 2021. Eduardo’s family settled in Roma eight generations back, when this was still Spanish territory. Leonardo leads most of the tours himself — he is the single most-mentioned thing in the distillery’s Google reviews.
Do you grow your own agave?
There are 2,500 agaves planted along the Rio Grande for a future Texas-grown harvest. Agave takes years in the ground before it can be distilled, so today’s bottles draw on a partner estate in Oaxaca while the Texas plants mature. The first estate-grown Texas harvest is still ahead of us.
What guests say after the tour
“We had the absolute pleasure of visiting the Ancestral Distillery and taking a tour with Leonardo. Not only is the distillery stunning but it’s steeped in history both in Roma and in its founders’ family histories. Leonardo’s knowledge of the production and history of both Agave and Mezcal is incredible and his passion for the agave spirit that they have created out of these rich traditions is so evident. We tried all three expressions of Blasfemus, the 7, 11 and 17 and each are beautiful and highlight the different agave varieties and they shine in each expression. If you have the opportunity to go, do! And bring plenty of friends along.”
“This place is amazing! A must if you’re in Roma — beautifully restored building with tons of local history. I purchased a bottle of 11 and I did a tasting of all three spirits, loved all three. I will definitely be going back — the patio in back was also very nice.”
